"projectDescription": "This project is a multiphase channel and estuary restoration project in the lower Eel River/Salt River complex that was initiated to reduce flooding, improve tidal flushing and provide habitat for a variety of species, including Chinook and Coho Salmon and Steelhead. Several phases are planned beyond the phase that was funded through NOAA. The broader project has included restoration of tidal estuarine channels, excavation and deepening of the Salt River channel, construction of a sediment retention basin, installation of in-stream large wood to improve fish habitat and planting riparian and wetland vegetation to stabilize soils and provide shading. Construction of this multi-phase project began in 2011 and continued through 2018. NOAA funding and technical assistance contributed to the excavation of the Salt River Channel and Lower Francis Creek, which opened 5.9 miles of tributary access, installing large wood habitat features within the channel, constructing a sediment retention basin at the confluence of Francis Creek and the Salt River, planting riparian vegetation and conducting physical and biological monitoring of the project results.",
