  "projectDescription": "The Mark West Creek Habitat Enhancement & Dam Removal Design Project, undertaken by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District, will evaluate a large reach of upper Mark West Creek that is low gradient and appropriate for instream and riparian restoration for endangered coho salmon and steelhead trout.  The project also includes an analysis of two remnant dams within the properties that are partial barriers and that might be holding back sediment vital to the habitat downstream.  Objectives of the instream designs are to improve summer and winter rearing conditions for coho salmon and steelhead trout.  Large wood structures will be used to create and maintain pools, store gravel, redirect flows and provide velocity refugia zones along the banks.  Biotechnical approaches will be used to re-establish a narrower, shaded active channel in these areas that have been over-widened and simplified. Specifically, funds were awarded to develop 65% design plans for two reaches in Mark West Creek, and a feasibility analysis for removing the two remnant dams.",
