  "projectDescription": "Since its designation as an AOC, much has been accomplished in the Buffalo River AOC, especially in remediating hazardous waste sites.  Significant work is currently underway to remediate contaminated sediment, which will aid in delisting seven of the AOC’s nine BUIs.  The primary issues affecting the Buffalo River today are impaired water quality, contaminated bottom sediments, inactive hazardous waste sites, point and nonpoint source pollution, combined sewer overflows, and fish and wildlife habitat loss and degradation.The Toe of Katherine St. Peninsula (TKSP) project included the restoration of approximately 843 linear feet of riverbank including re-establishing almost 600 linear feet of turtle nesting area on the shoreline. Around 2.30 acres of riparian and upland habitat was reworked to control invasive vegetation and promote native landscapes. In-water habitat restoration adjacent to the site was completed through the Great Lakes Legacy Act work. The TKSP restoration brings the Buffalo River approximately 4.23% closer to delisting Beneficial Use Impairment (BUI) #14-1-b:  14: Loss of Fish and Wildlife Habitat, 1) Restore Habitat Connectivity; AND b) implement the Buffalo River Habitat Action Plan (2013).",
