"projectDescription": "Cow Trap Lake is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as part of San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, located north of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway near the mouth of the San Bernard River. Within Cow Trap Lake exists oyster reefs, submerged aquatic vegetation, and open water. North of the Lake are hundreds of acres of important emergent fresh and intermediate wetlands. The north shoreline of Cow Trap Lake has suffered from significant erosion during the past decades. Many acres of coastal marsh habitat have been lost. Wind driven waves are impacting the shoreline causing marsh loss and increased turbidity. A proven method of protecting shorelines from erosive, wind-driven waves is to construct marsh terraces within the open water. Terraces will reduce wave energy, erosion, and turbidity. After construction, the terraces are providing conditions for fringing emergent marsh vegetation to establish, and potentially improve conditions submerged aquatic vegetation. In addition to the marsh terraces, 0.75 acres of oyster reef was created by placing cultch material within the terrace field.",
