"projectDescription": "On December 7, 1997, over 50 million gallons of acidic process water was released into the Alafia River from a fertilizer plant in Mulberry, Polk County, Florida. The release injured natural resources in the Alafia River and in Tampa Bay. Several public agencies, including NOAA, FDEP and EPC, worked together to assess natural resource injuries and losses caused by the Spill and to recover natural resource damages to compensate for these losses from the party responsible. This project consisted of two components implemented on MacDill Airforce Base: the Mangrove/Tidal Creek project and the Lewis Lake Project. The first component involved the restoration of 34 acres of intertidal lagoons/channels, high and low marsh platforms, mangrove islands, upland islands, upland hammocks, and relic mangrove forest. To accomplish project goals, large stands of non-native vegetation had to be removed, followed by excavation of lagoons and channels to restore tidal availability. The second component, the Lewis Lake Project, modified an existing freshwater/oligohaline stormwater treatment pond that was intermittently intertidal via the pond’s overflow control structure. This 26.6 acre project increased the size of the pond, created new open water and marsh platforms, removed all cattails and other nuisance/non-native plants from marsh platforms, and resulted in improved water quality for the bay due to enhanced stormwater treatment capacity of the pond.",
