  "projectDescription": "Big River and its tributaries are critical habitat for endangered Central California Coast Coho Salmon and threatened North Coast steelhead. Dry Dock Gulch enters the Big River approximately 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. At the confluence with Big River, consisting of two severely undersized, dilapidated culverts perched several feet above grade were acting as a barrier to adult and juvenile salmonids. This crossing was damaged in several locations by bank erosion and fill-slope instability, and was a high priority for remediation given its close proximity to the Big River estuary. NOAA provided funding to Trout Unlimited through CRP to conduct feasibility and 100% designs. Funding was subsequently provided through the IIJA for project implementation. The 24” and 36” diameter culverts were replaced with a 10-foot-wide, 68-foot-long aluminum culvert in summer/fall of 2023, providing full passage for adult and juvenile salmonids into 0.76 miles of good quality spawning and rearing habitat and a 2.6 acre freshwater pond upstream of the culvert. A 0.3 acre tidally-influenced alcove was constructed in an existing area of shallow marsh near the culvert inlet, and six log structures were added to create additional off-channel rearing habitat. Post-project monitoring showed that juvenile CCC coho salmon and NC steelhead were present above the former barrier site and using the restored habitat as refuge. Numerous trees will be felled into the pond and alcove in the summer of 2025.",
