  "projectDescription": "This project addresses restoration actions to help recover Acropora cervicornis (staghorn coral) and A. palmata (elkhorn coral), two coral species that are listed as “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.   Staghorn (9,925) and elkhorn (4,100) corals will be transplanted from Coral Reef Foundation nurseries to reefs at densities and sizes that exceed what is found within the natural population.  Relatively large corals (>25cm to 45cm diameter) will be grown in nurseries and transplanted to various reef sites in the Florida Keys.  Through careful hypothesis-driven monitoring, whether or not clusters and thickets that approximate pre-dieoff densities will be more resilient to existing disturbances will be tested. The project will also address developing offshore nursery techniques for three additional species of stony coral that have been nominated for listing as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act (Montastrea faveolata, Montastrea annularis, and Dendrogyra cylindricus).",
