"projectDescription": "Since the 1980’s, oyster reef habitat has declined precipitously in Florida’s Big Bend region. To mitigate these declines, this oyster restoration project incorporated two new techniques in oyster restoration: (1) use of bagged building blocks of living oysters transplanted to create instant living reefs that are resilient to wave action, and (2) designing reefs to capture and protect extant oyster spat and increase growth and survival by enhancing water flow around reef structure in a way that allows built reefs to naturally expand. The restoration project established stable substrate along 25 km of shoreline and used donated, bagged live oysters to boost oyster recruitment. Clean limerock boulders established a hard substrate over existing eroded sand bars and each site was lined with the oyster bags. The restoration of reefs in this pilot project suggests that long term resilience can be built into oyster reefs by the addition of hardened surface and durable substrate and that the established artificial reefs have positive effects on erosion, water flow, water quality, and wildlife.",
