"projectDescription": "The Manistique River Area of Concern (AOC) is in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Sediments and associated wood waste/debris were contaminated by historical discharges of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into a 1.7 mile section of the river. The site continues to be designated as an AOC because of two remaining beneficial use impairments (BUIs): (1) restrictions on fish and wildlife consumption as a result of elevated PCB concentrations in fish; and (2) restrictions on dredging activities due to PCB contamination in sediments that impairs dredging of the navigation channel. With funding provided by GLRI, NOAA coordinated with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to complete actions at the Manistique River AOC that are targeted to facilitate removal of the two remaining BUIs.The NOAA-funded cleanup and restoration of the Manistique River occurred in several phases. The process began in 2013 with a Feasibility Study and detailed modeling of the river mouth sediment conditions. Dredging activities completed in 2016 and 2019 then removed over 50,000 cubic yards of PCB contaminated sediment. Barges and excavators removed sediment from areas of contamination near the river mouth, the sediment was processed and sent to landfills, and a layer of clean sand infused with activated carbon was spread over portions of the river bottom. The final round of dredging activities and cover material placement was completed in December 2019.",
