"projectDescription": "This project restored both the natural function and cultural value of the Kiholo fishponds by removing invasive riparian vegetation along the fishpond margins, and planting native species, thus increasing juvenile habitat and overall pond water quality, in order to increase juvenile fish survival. Fishpond management was based on traditional Hawaiian protocols, and provides economic benefits as well as acting as a cultural resource. In addition to the beneficial increase in reef fish abundance that would be gained by restoration of the Kiholo fishponds, the ponds owned by The Nature Conservancy at Kiholo provide an ideal setting to assess and demonstrate the importance of fishponds to coastal fishery recruitment.Hui Aloha Kiholo conducted restoration activities in six anchialine pools along the North Kona coastline. These pools support a high level of endemism and representation of both aquatic and marine species that are tolerant of this range of conditions. The introduction of invasive non-native fish (including mosquito fish and tilapia) into anchialine pools is a substantial problem, and in order to protect and restore the anchialine poolsand the rare species that inhabit them, the project evaluated removal of non-native fish by electrofishing and the use of carbon dioxide to anesthetize fish, to allow for the return of native shrimp - a common prey species for mullet - to the pools.",
