"projectDescription": "The Fore River Trail Project compensated the public for the lost public use of Portland Harbor and the Fore River during the Julie N oil spill and its cleanup. In October of 2000, the Trustees awarded $125,000 of Julie N funds to Portland Trails for the construction of the trail and the installation of interpretive signage along the trail. The construction was completed in the summer of 2001 and was dedicated in a public ceremony on September 27, 2001.The trail and educational signage enhances the visitation experience of trail users by increasing usage and awareness of the sensitive ecology along the Fore River. It provides both recreational and ecological benefits to the public. By linking two existing trail systems, the project enhances the use and value of the entire trail system as a public recreational resource for walking, biking, hiking, jogging, and provides scenic and wildlife viewing opportunities to the public. The trail provides access to the scenic waterfront along the upper Fore River. The one-mile segment of trail includes interpretive signage in Portland, along the Fore River in an area of shoreline heavily oiled by the spill.",
