  "projectDescription": "The now non-functional 8th Street dam was fitted with a lifting mechanism to raise the flood gates at the site and leave them up during spring, summer and fall. This opens an additional 7 miles of high quality estuarine rearing habitat to the mix of salmon species that utilize the estuary of the Columbia River. The water quality has improved dramatically, with the water looking cleaner, higher dissolved oxygen and lowered temperatures. Salinities are also normalizing. Fish are passing the gate in increasing numbers.",
