  "projectDescription": "The objective of this project was to increase the year-round rearing and winter refugia for juvenile salmonids and spawning on the natural riffles in a selected section of Green Gulch Creek, tributary to Redwood Creek by replacing the lowest section of the straightened channel with 700 feet of new, meandering channel. Work on Green Gulch Creek was conducted approximately 0.5 miles upstream from the confluence of Redwood Creek. Stream length increased from a length of 450 feet to 700 feet and channel grade was decreased from 2.3% to 1.5%. With its wide, active floodplains it will also provide excellent habitat for a range of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species. Three meander bends of varying length and amplitude allowed the creation of four larger, complex floodplain areas that were planted with a diverse palette of native riparian species. To maximize edge habitat and flow refugia for salmonids, these floodplains will begin to be inundated at ½ bankfull flows (~29 cfs). At bankfull flows (1.5 year return interval flow) nearly half of the floodplain area will be inundated. To minimize bank erosion and provide habitat complexity, log/rootwad structures, log vanes, and brush mattresses were installed on the outside bends. Two slow-water alcoves that are filled with large wood have been incorporated into the Meander Reach to provide high quality shelter habitat.",
