  "projectDescription": "The purpose of the St. Lucie Estuary (SLE) Oyster Reef Habitat Restoration Project is to restore historic oyster reef habitat and improve shoreline stability. By restoring approximately 2 acres of oyster reef habitat, and creating stretches of living shoreline, in the SLE, the project furthers the Estuary Restoration Act's mission to protect and restore marine and coastal habitats.  The project also furthers NOAA’s coastal resiliency objectives due to the fact that oyster reef restoration combined with living shorelines can help to protect against stresses caused by sea level rise/climate change. By leveraging the ERA funds with St. Lucie River Issues Team grant funds, the County was able to increase the constructed oyster reef acreage to 4.52 acres during the summer of 2013. The living shoreline component of oyster shell bags, oyster domes and saltmarsh planting was completed early summer 2014.  959 volunteers contributed 2133 hours to the living shoreline component of the project.  This project will post-restoration monitoring efforts through the fall of 2017.",
