"projectDescription": "The overall goal of Olympia oyster restoration in Puget Sound is to rebuild dense, breeding populations of Olympia oysters in areas that supported core populations historically in order to restore the ecosystem services that dense accumulations of living oysters once provided. Funds from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) / National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) partnership grant will be used to implement key objectives that lay the groundwork for achieving 10-year, 100-acre Olympia oyster restoration goals, including: 1) identifying high priority embayments; 2) integrating Olympia oyster objectives into the National and State Shellfish Initiatives; 3) obtaining 5-year programmatic permits for larger-scale restoration; 4) working with the co-managers (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the tribes) to develop strategic plans for Puget Sound sub-basins; 5) establishing a core Olympia oyster team that meets regularly to coordinate activities, and review and update genetic protocols; 6) developing new sources of shell substrate; 7) expanding hatchery capability; 8) developing clear performance metrics; and 9) quantifying ecosystem services provided by consolidated native oyster bed structure at the Dogfish Bay enhancement site.",
