  "projectDescription": "This project contributed to the goal to re-open Waipa Stream to active, unhindered flow and allow aquatic life to once again migrate up and down the stream. 2.5 acres of habitat were restored by removing vegetation from the banks of the stream and actively re-opening the stream channel in a few places where the stream was closed off completely. Invasive vegetation (mainly hau bush) was cleared from the stream's riparian corridor and replaced with plant communities focused on native plants and Hawaiian cultural plants, including a \"food forest\" that will benefit the local community for years to come.  A section of stream was cleared of debris, providing improved fish passage and habitat conditions in the project area. After three years of restoration, several native fish species have been observed utilizing newly restored habitat in the stream where none had been seen for years prior to the project's initiation.",
