  "projectDescription": "The initial phase of the Coonamesset River project produced a feasibility study and design plans to restore free flowing stream functions by the removal or modification of 4 partial barriers to fish passage on the Coonamessett River.  With additional funding provided in 2016, the Town of Falmouth completed engineering design for Middle Dam removal, replacement of John Parkers Road culverts, and the restoration of the remainder of the Lower Coonamessett River by restoring river channel and riparian wetland and floodplain connectivity. The Lower Bog dam was removed in December 2017 and Lower Bog wetland restoration was completed in May 2018. The removal of the Middle Dam, Middle Bog wetland restoration, and replacement of the John Parker Road culverts were completed in May 2020. Collectively, these restoration activities opened 2.2 miles of lower perennial river for river herring and American eel to access upstream spawning and rearing habitats, including the 158-acre Coonamessett Pond and Flax Pond. The two phases of the project has also resulted in restoration of 56 riparian wetland acres and 4,600 feet of stream channel.",
