  "projectDescription": "This project removed invasive mangroves, invasive marine algae (Gracilaria salicornia/gorilla ogo), and prickly seaweed from inside two 15th century fish ponds on the fringing reef of the Hawaiian Island of Molokai.  Removing invasive species from freshwater springs, pond gates, pond walls, and from within the pond benefited the surrounding reef flats by: 1) reestablishing sediment-free freshwater sources; 2) improving shoreline habitat for native species; 3) removing mangrove root structure and gorilla ogo mats that trap fine sediment on the reef flats; and 4) restoring rearing habitat (within the ponds) for native species.  This project restored 2 acres of beach, 28 acres of soft bottom, 28 acres of hard bottom, and 2 acres of 600 year old basalt rock walls that function as rocky shoreline.",
