  "projectDescription": "The Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park led this project to remove debris from a former dump site located on an environmentally sensitive island in the harbor of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, USVI.  The largest source of debris was located directly adjacent to Careening Cove and was affecting the health of adjacent marine habitats and species.  A certified environmental contractor removed approximately 55 metric tons of large and small debris (boat wreckage, household appliances, galvanized sheeting, etc.) from the island's dumpsite. A rubber-tired front end loader was used to separate and then load the debris into 20 cubic yard dumpsters which was then transported by barge to St. Thomas for disposal.  More than 2 acres of the island was cleared of debris and approximately 0.125 acre was directly restored through the removal of large debris.  A local community group was also recruited to clean the shoreline in Careening Cove.",
