  "projectDescription": "Tremendous losses of oyster reefs had occurred in the St. Lucie River Estuary due to physical changes to the watershed, pollution, erosion and hurricanes. The main objective of this project was to create four oyster reefs near the Evans-Crary Bridge in the St. Lucie Estuary (SLE) in Stuart, FL (see RCDB #2487) and two control oyster reefs in Indian River Lagoon (IRL) in Ft. Pierce, FL.  Two of the reefs in the SLE and one reef in the IRL were seeded with oyster larvae inside containment booms to jumpstart their propagation.  The seeding of these reefs helped to create a more stable seed source.  Along with restoring oyster reefs and their associated species, the project enabled us to determine if this restoration approach would work in an area where oysters and their substrate have been completely obliterated with little or no available seed source. Benefits of the project beyond the restored oyster reef include improved water quality, increased public awareness of oyster reefs and their value to aquatic ecosystems, shoreline stabilization and improvement in fisheries habitat.",
