"projectDescription": "Due to extremely high land loss rates in the Barataria Bay watershed, East and West Grand Terre Islands were expected to disappear by the year 2050. In order to extend the lives of these islands, which serve an important protective function to the wetland habitats to the north, dredged sediments were placed at intertidal elevations creating 165 acres of protective dune and 456 acres of backbarrier marsh habitats. NOAA CWPPRA paid for the engineering and design and the Coastal Impact Assistance Program, as overseen by the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management, provided the funding for construction.",
