"projectDescription": "The Cate School Fish Passage Improvement Project, undertaken by the South Coast Habitat Restoration/Earth Island Institute, removed a concrete stream crossing along the mainstem of Carpinteria Creek that acted as a fish passage barrier to endangered Southern California steelhead trout. The project included replacing the crossing with a single clear-span bridge, regrading the creek, and conducting native plant restoration. The project was part of a watershed-wide effort to remove all barriers to fish migration, including several downstream barriers and one upstream barrier already completed. Removal of the Cate School crossing opened 0.24 miles of instream habitat until the next upstream barrier. In 2011, NOAA also funded erosion control activities at the project site through Recovery Act funding awarded to the California Conservation Corps.",
