"projectDescription": "Through the Open Rivers Initiative, NOAA contributed to the restoration of the Nisqually River estuary, located within the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, WA. Approximately 762 acres of estuary and over 20 miles of sloughs and channels have been reconnected to the Puget Sound upon removal of the perimeter dike in 2009. The restored estuarine habitat re-establishes a direct hydrological connection to the Nisqually River, McAllister Creek, and Puget Sound. In addition to the federally threatened Chinook, the project will benefit coho, chum, and pink salmon, coastal cutthroat trout, steelhead, and Pacific herring.",
