  "projectDescription": "Poplar Island almost totally disappeared from the Chesapeake Bay due to land subsidence and erosion. The US Army Corps of Engineers beneficially used dredged material from maintenance of navigational channels to rebuild the original 1,000+ acre profile of Poplar Island. NOAA Fisheries is working for the Corps to perform fisheries monitoring of the island to determine utilization of the recreated marsh habitats of the island and nearshore environments. NOAA funded nekton community monitoring in FY12, FY13, and FY14 to complete necessary sediment and fish, shrimp, and crab (nekton) assessments for restored and reference marshes on Poplar Island. These assessments will assist NOAA in determining the causes for documented differences in nekton growth potential at post restoration and reference sites. In FY18, funding was provided to develop a conceptual model that will facilitate comparative analysis of infaunal and resident marsh nekton patterns. This partnership will allow NOAA and UNCW to work together to determine if any mid-course corrective actions to the Poplar Island Environmental Restoration Project would be beneficial to improve overall ecosystem function.",
