  "projectDescription": "In 2004, the Trustees reached a settlement with Chevron for $4.4 million to fund habitat restoration. Three projects were selected to restore coastal habitat to compensate the public for natural resources lost or injured as a result from releases of hazardous substances from the Chevron/Old Gulf South waste site. Two of the projects involved restoring a natural hydrology to coastal wetlands by installing water flow enhancement structures and berms. The third project aimed to create intertidal estuarine marsh and coastal wet prairie complex by using nearby dredge material. All projects were implemented by Chevron within the state wildlife management areas (WMA) owned and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).\n\n- The Jefferson County Wetlands Restoration Project at the J.D. Murphree WMA, consisted of constructing two water flow enhancement structures and a low terrace berm with an adjacent ditch and the plugging of an existing ditch in the project area. The new water control structures manage water circulation and flow dynamics more efficiently and restore historic seasonal hydrology. The installation of the structures restored and improved water management capabilities and enhanced approximately 600 acres of emergent marsh, supra-tidal marsh, and wet coastal prairie.\n\n- The Old River South Water Flow Enhancement Structures Restoration Project at the Lower Neches WMA involved the construction of a low water plug and eight culverts to improve the existing tidal hydrologic water features. The work involved installing a series of culverts beneath Bailey Road,  to convey flow from the Lower Neches WMA to the historic Old River Bayou. In addition to the culverts, an earthen plug was constructed across the canal adjacent to the west side of Bailey Road to reduce saline water intrusion into the Lower Neches WMA by directing the flow of water through the culverts under Bailey Road and through Old River Bayou.\n\n-The  Old River South Estuarine Marsh Complex and Coastal Wet Prairie Restoration Project at Lower Neches WMA consisted of constructing a marsh complex including planting of vegetation to create at least 85 acres of estuarine wetlands (the “Estuarine Marsh Complex”) and the construction and planting of vegetation to create approximately 30 acres of coastal wet prairie (the “Coastal Wet Prairie”).",
