"projectDescription": "In partnership with NOAA and American Rivers, the Coastal San Luis Resource Conservation District assembled a team to develop designs for a project to restore passage for endangered Southern California steelhead trout under a Union Pacific Railroad crossing on Pismo Creek in San Luis Obispo County, California. Addressing this barrier (the highest-ranking migratory fish passage barrier in the county) will reestablish access to 7 miles of upstream spawning habitat. The team examined several options, including the construction of a new fish ladder, the installation of a combination weir/step/pool structure, and reconstruction of the downstream channel via a \"roughened channel\" design. Ultimately, the roughened channel option wa chosen given that it would provide passage to adult and juvenile steelhead while also allowing improved sediment transport and minimal maintenance. 100% design plans have been completed and the team is now pursuing funds for project construction.",
