  "projectDescription": "Phragmites australis is a rapidly spreading invasive non-native reed that is choking out native diverse marsh vegetation. In 2000 and 2001 the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) tried to control this invasion in the lower Lieutenant River by modifying the hydrology of the tidal marshes, applying herbicide, and then mowing. The Nature Conservancy also started a Phragmites control effort on the upper Lieutenant River. This five year project of The Nature Conservancy and Connecticut College monitors these sites to track the vegetation's responses to various treatment regimes.",
