"projectDescription": "The Trustees selected the Scarborough Marsh as an area to implement a habitat restoration project to address injuries to marine birds and wetlands habitat resulting from the Julie N Oil Spill. After considering several options, the Trustee selected the acquisition of the Gervais property as the preferred restoration option for accomplishing restoration within the Scarborough Marsh. The Trustees provided $327,692.93 toward the purchase of the Gervais property to protect a portion of Scarborough Marsh and adjacent upland to benefit species impacted by the Julie N Spill. The acquisition of the entire parcel (46.5 + acres at a total cost of $795,000) was completed with contributions from the Town of Scarborough, Land for Maine Future Board, Friends of Scarborough Marsh, Davis Foundation, and Ducks Unlimited. A large portion of the Gervais Property is marshland that is part of an ecologically significant block of conservation land to be added to the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area, managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Purchasing this property protected a significant portion of the Scarborough Marsh from further industrial development and conserved valuable upland wildlife habitat for the New England cottontail rabbit (which is listed as endangered by the state and under consideration for federal listing) and other species. Additionally, the property provides an ideal location for initiating educational programs.",
