"projectDescription": "In the last 50 years wild harvest of the Indian River Lagoon hard clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) population sustained a major fishery. Today, however, that same population has been depleted as a commercial fishery for over a decade. Scientists at the FL Fish and Wildlife Research Institute have worked to collaborate with other scientists, fishermen, and aquaculture industries to investigate restoration options. Two methods of enhancement were implemented: 1) immediate free-release of fertilized larvae and 2) delayed controlled-release of ready-to-set pediveligers. Assessment of these restoration methods were variable in their success, but results indicate that the amount of hard clam larvae within the target basin increased after larval release events; adult densities remained consistent; and spawner clumps were present. Results suggest that settlement issues exist, and the project team intends to continue developing abilities to research and restore IRL hard clam populations.",
