  "projectDescription": "Mona Island, located off of the western coast of Puerto Rico, has sea turtle nesting beaches that are known to host the largest Hawksbill nesting population in U.S. territory. Sections of the beaches were infested with invasive tree species.  Studies show that beaches with invasive vegetation have a lowered rate of sea turtle nesting.  It is thought that this may be due to the loss of native vegetation and biodiversity on the beach, as well as the presence of invasive species may alter the chemical composition of the sediment within the area.  Therefore, this project removed the invasive plants from two acres along the western coast of the island. Volunteers also maintained and monitored the previously removed trees, removed pine needles from test plots in densely covered ground areas, and developed a monitoring program to evaluate the success of the project.",
