  "projectDescription": "During the summer of 2006, 18 high school students worked to restore salmon habitat in the Elochoman River Watershed in Wahkiakum County, Washington. The students conducted habitat assessments, invasive species removal, and native plantings along Duck Creek, Nelson Creek, and in the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge. They also raised more than 800 feet of fencing  along private property to protect riparian buffer zones from cattle. Matching funds were used by the county to replace an old perched culvert with a bridge that better facilitated fish passage in Duck Creek. Throughout the summer and during the school year the students continued to perform plant, fish, and amphibian monitoring throughout the Elochoman River Watershed.  An increase in the numbers of spawning Coho and Chinook salmon using this enhanced habitat has already been observed.",
