"projectDescription": "The 'Tampa Bay Tidal Tributary Initiative Project' scientifically evaluated the ecological conditions of tidal tributaries across Tampa Bay. This study showcased new findings for the Tampa Bay area including the importance of benthic microalgae found in the small backwater creeks to the food web; the importance of these areas to the production of common snook in Tampa Bay; and how the degree of development density around these small systems is associated with degraded water quality and increased sediment contaminants. Management recommendations resulting from the study included maintaining connectivity between open bay, tidal rivers and tidal tributaries to allow fish use throughout their life cycle; reducing ?flashiness? in these small backwater areas to promote production of benthic microalgae; protect non-developed buffers to maintain water and sediment quality; and improve public awareness of these important ecological systems.",
