  "projectDescription": "This project involves engineering assessment and design and permitting for salt marsh restoration in the Great Meadows Marsh (GMM) at the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge in Stratford, Connecticut to provide injury restoration of estuarine fishes, shellfish and migratory waterfowl and their habitats including salt marsh. The injuries resulted from contaminant releases at the former Lordship Pt shooting range and multiple properties formerly owned by Raymark Industries in Stratford, CT. Trustee agencies include NOAA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Funds from these two DARRP cases are being combined to implement restoration once the permits are secured. Fill removal is the proposed primary restoration technique to restore irregularly and to a lesser extent regularly flooded salt marsh, and fill placement (thin-layer placement), invasive plant management are other marsh rehabilitation techniques, along with restoring state-endangered diamondback terrapin nesting habitat and rehabilitating state-endangered marsh pink, a coastal plain plant species. The project implementation is expected to begin in fall 2021 and be substantially completed by late March 2022.",
