  "projectDescription": "Soft-shell clamming has long been a vital commercial fishery on the North Shore of Massachusetts. During the past decade, the fishery has seen significant declines and wide fluctuations in productivity, with landings plummeting as much as 80 percent. This project worked to further develop and implement an economically optimal and environmentally sound method of shellfish stock enhancement in the North Shore communities of Massachusetts. NOAA and Ocean Trust worked with other groups, volunteers, and displaced commercial fishermen to restore the North Shore shellfish beds by seeding target areas deemed under or un-productive with soft-shell clams. One and a half million juvenile soft-shell clams were purchased and reared, planted, covered with protective netting, and monitored for approximately two years.",
