  "projectDescription": "Matagorda Island, which was once an established marsh habitat, had been sectioned off and drained in the 1950s to be converted into cattle pastures. An extensive levee system was created that enclosed and segmented the marsh, and culverts were constructed to restore the western portion of the marsh to a more natural condition, but the culverts failed and the water flow throughout the marsh was diminished. This project restored 675 acres of salt marsh by replacing two smaller culverts with three larger culverts that restored water flow throughout the habitat system.",
