"projectDescription": "This project restored the degraded saltmarsh and mangrove systems of Wildcat Cove Preserve within St. Lucie County, Florida. This 129-acre site was impounded in the 1960’s for mosquito control purposes. The Wildcat Cove restoration project reconnected the site to the Indian River Lagoon by removing invasive vegetation and installing six culverts. This on-the-ground restoration project benefits living marine resources by increasing available habitat that is important to the refuge, spawning, and rearing areas essential to fisheries. Not only did this project help to stabilize this estuarine system, but it also educated and engaged the local community through native species planting events and educational signage placed throughout the preserve. Approximately 99 acres of saltmarsh and mangrove habitat was restored.",
