"projectDescription": "Rainbow smelt are an important source of food for many larger species of fish, such as Atlantic cod, Atlantic salmon, striped bass, and bluefish. They spawn in coastal streams throughout the Northeast, and are also caught in both commercial and recreational fisheries. Rainbow smelt spawn in New Hampshire's Winnicut River, immediately downstream of the Winnicut Dam in Greenland, but there is currently not enough information concerning the timing of the run, its size, and the number of eggs that are produced. The impact of the dam on spawning runs is also not known. During the 2004 spawning season, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department gathered this information through this project, as it considered the potential ecological benefits associated with removing the Winnicut Dam. The surveys 1) determined the location and extent of suitable smelt spawning habitat downstream of the dam, 2) characterized these habitats, and 3) estimated the number of smelt eggs that are deposited in suitable habitats. These monitoring efforts were then used in the Winnicut River Dam Removal Feasibility Study.",
