  "projectDescription": "In the first phase of the project, Assateague Coastal Trust and others created an oyster sanctuary near Ocean City, Maryland.  Disease resistant seed oysters were grown by local oyster gardener volunteers in floating cages (2,000 oysters per cage) and planted on a reconstructed reef composed of 30 thousand bushels of clean oyster shell.  The second phase of the project entails increasing the oyster gardeners by 40 percent, expanding the southern edge of the existing oyster bed, and creating a second bed (1/4-acre in size)  in a shallow intertidal zone.  The long-term survival and growth of the oyster reef will be monitored to determine if oysters can be successfully restored to Maryland's coastal bays.",
