  "projectDescription": "The purpose of this project was to initiate restoration of hard clam populations through the creation of spawner sanctuaries and protection of juvenile clam sets in the Great South Bay (GSB) of NY. Tens of thousands of young adult to full adult size hard clams were purchased from Connecticut suppliers and transported to the GSB. The clams survived successfully through several seasons. A toxic algal bloom spiked by high nitrogen loads from groundwater sources combined with unusually high summer temperatures caused high mortality of all hard clams in the GSB in two successive years.",
